FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State women's basketball coach Adrian Wiggins has announced the signing of Alex Sheedy to a National Letter of Intent. Sheedy is a strong, athletic 6-0 forward from Moe, Victoria, Australia, making her the eighth Australian to join the Bulldogs' women's program.
"Alex is a long post player who will really fit into our program," Coach Wiggins said. "She comes from the famous AIS (Australian Institute of Sports) which is the training ground for Olympic athletes. We are excited to have her in our program and she fits what we are looking for to have continued success."
Sheedy was a selection on the Under 19 Australian Gems and most recently the Under 20 Victorian State Squad. Her U20 team claimed the 2011 Under 20 Australian Junior Championship title this past February. Sheedy averaged 6.4 points and 5.3 rebounds over seven games on the U20 squad.
Sheedy was a recipient of the 50th Annual Junior Gippstar Award which recognizes athletic achievement in national and international sport.
This signing continues the women's basketball tradition of brining aboard Australian players which started in 2002 when the Dogs recruited forward Faith Probst followed by Chantella Perera the next season. The 2010-11 team featured five players from Australia including seniors Emma Andrews and Hayley Munro, sophomores Ali Drennan and Rosie Moult and freshman Bree Farley.
