FRESNO, Calif. - In a field with six teams ranked in the top 50, the Fresno State women's golf team fought hard to hold onto ninth place out of 12 teams on the final day of the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate in Half Moon Bay, Calif.
"Overall I am really proud of the team," head coach Angie Cates remarked. "This was a very competitive field and they played tough."
The Bulldogs (307-310-306) finished at 59-over, 923, one stroke ahead of No. 42 UNLV. The Dogs' final round 306 was their lowest score of the three round tournament.
The Dogs were led by junior Louisa Lies' 9-over, 225 which put her in a tie for 13th. Lies (73-75-77) sank seven birdies throughout the three rounds which tied her for the third most of the tournament.
Lies entered the final round tied for fourth but was 7-over through her first 11 holes Tuesday. She was able to recover with two birdies and five pars on her final seven holes. The birdies came on the par-5 fourth and par-3 seventh, her final hole of the tournament.
"I think Louisa's knee bothers her after a 36 hole day," coach Cates said regarding an injury Lies sustained earlier this year. "She struggled in the beginning but finished strong."
Shaylee Yano (74-78-77), a sophomore from Reedley, Calif., matched her best finish of the season by tying for 26th place with a 13-over, 229. Freshman Christine Uhalde (81-76-78) carded a 19-over, 235 while Krysta Clark (79-81-76--236) finished one shot behind Uhalde at 20-over. Senior Chelsea Czinski (82-82-76--240) posted a 24-over to end the tournament in 61st place.
No. 37 Oregon (304-297-290--891, +27) recorded a 2-under par Tuesday and edged out No. 27 Texas A&M (298-298-296--892, +28) by one stroke to take home the team title. Katerina Ruzickova of Texas A&M claimed the individual title by shooting a 2-over par, 218.
This marked the Bulldog's last regular season tournament but they will compete in the WAC Championship April 15-17 at Longbow Country Club in Mesa, Ariz.
"We know what we need to do at the WAC Championship to move onto post season play and we have a week to work hard and prepare," coach Cates concluded.
"We Are Your Team!" Fresno State women's golf returns to action April 15-17 at the WAC Championship held at Longbow Country Club in Mesa, Ariz.
