Dogs Mercy Rule Aggies

FRESNO, Calif. - The No. 21 Fresno State baseball team 10-run ruled New Mexico State on Friday night after beating the Aggies 17-4 in seven innings. The Bulldogs scored at least one run every time they came to bat and scored an inning-high five runs in the third and sixth innings. The Dogs improve to 33-11 on the season and 13-7 in Western Athletic Conference play.
The Bulldogs amassed 12 hits against the Aggies while only giving up five. Designated hitter Kenny Wise and outfielder Aaron Judge were both 3-for-4 on the night. Wise and senior Jordan Ribera had a game-high three RBIs. Also recording multi-hit game were Ribera (2-for-4) and junior Dusty Robinson (2-for-5). Fresno State recorded 13 walks against NM State.
The pitching staff struck out a total of 13 batters in seven innings. The Dogs gave up four runs and only two were earned runs. The Bulldogs allowed three walks.
Danny Muno led off the game with a walk. Junior Brennan Gowens hit a sacrifice hit and reached base on an Aggie throwing error. The error allowed Muno to score the first run of the game and a second throwing error allowed Gowens to advance to second base. Ribera increased the Dogs lead 2-0 with an RBI single through the right side.
Fresno State ace Greg Gonzalez struck out the side in the top of the second inning. He struck out 10 Aggie Batters in five innings of work and gave up two earned runs. Gonzalez has 106 strikeouts on the season and he leads both the team and league in batters struck out.
Gonzalez allowed five hits in his 13th start of the season. He earned his ninth win of the season and improves to 9-0 on the mound. The senior has recorded 11-straight victories dating back to May of 2010.
In the second inning, Judge singled up the middle to start off the inning. Catcher Austin Wynns followed with a four-pitch walk. Muno reached on an error allowing two more runs to score and the Dogs lead extended to 4-0 over New Mexico State.
Wise crushed his fourth home run of the season over the right center field fence in the third inning. The two-run home run extended the Bulldogs lead 6-0. A bases loaded walk brought home another Bulldog run. Robinson doubled to left field driving home two more runs and the Dogs lead 9-0 after three complete innings.
Wise led off the fourth inning with his second hit of the game, a double to right center field. He advanced to third base on a wild pitch. Wynns hit an RBI double as the Dogs lead grew 10-0. Gowens singled up the middle bringing in the final run of the inning and the Dogs took an 11-0 lead into the fifth inning.
New Mexico State got on the board in the fifth inning scoring four runs and trailed the Bulldogs 11-4 heading into the bottom half of the inning.
Three straight walks loaded the bases for the Bulldogs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Sophomore Scott David reached on a base on a fielder's choice that allowed the Dogs score increasing their lead 12-4.
Freshman Will Anderson came into close the game in the sixth inning. The right-hander threw two scoreless innings and did not allow a hit. He struck out three of the seven batters he faced.
The Bulldogs lead grew to double digit numbers again in the sixth inning. Gowens led off with a walk. Robinson hit his second double to left field advancing Gowens to third base. Ribera drove in two runs with a double and the Dogs led the Aggies 14-4.
The sixth inning continued as Wise drove in his third RBI of the night with a double to the same spot he hit his home run the inning before. Judge drove in the final two runs of the game for the Bulldogs by hitting a single up the middle.
The Bulldogs won the first game of the series by a final score of 17-4. The Dogs take on New Mexico State again on Friday, May 13 at 6:05 p.m.
