FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State football program notorious for preparing young men to continue their football careers at the next level. There are six former Bulldogs in the Canadian Football League and UFL. Here is a look at how those guys are doing this season.
Canadian League
Dante Marsh, Cornerback, British Columbia Lions
Dante Marsh enters his eighth season in the CFL and with the British Columbia Lions. The Lions are 6-6 in 2011. This season, Marsh has recorded 43 tackles, one sack, and three interceptions. He has over 400 tackles, 22 interceptions, six fumble recoveries in his career. Marsh finished his college career at Fresno State with nine interceptions and three defensive touchdowns. He was sixth on the team in tackles with 58 in 1999.
UFL
Ryan Colburn, Quarterback, Sacramento Mountain Lions
Ryan Colburn enters his first season in the UFL and with the Sacramento Mountain Lions. He earned the starter role as the Mountain Lions quarterback and first-round draft pick by Sacramento. The Mountain Lions are off to a 0-1 start after losing to Las Vegas. During his senior season at Fresno State, Colburn was 227-for-360 (63.1 percent) for 2,817 yards, 23 touchdowns and nine interceptions.
Clifton Smith, Running Back, Virginia Destroyers
Clifton Smith begins his first season in the UFL and with the Virginia Destroyers. Virginia is leading the league with a 2-0 record. He rushed for 620 yards and 5 TDS and added 2 punt return TDs in his final season with the Bulldogs. He played three seasons in the NFL with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Cleveland Browns and Miami Dolphins. Smith played in the 2008 Pro Bowl.
Marcus Riley, Linebacker, Las Vegas Locos
Marcus Riley begins his third season in the UFL and with the Las Vegas Locos. Las Vegas is off to a 1-1 start and is in second place, so far. Last season, He made 11 total tackles and knocked down a pass. He played in 39 games over four seasons at Fresno State from 2004-2007. Riley recorded a total of 225 tackles, 21 tackles for losses, 7.5 sacks, 2 interceptions and 5 forced fumbles
Jason Stewart, Defensive Tackle, Sacramento Mountain Lions
Jason Stewart returns for a third UFL season and second with the Mountain Lions. Sacramento is 0-1 so far this season and face Omaha this weekend. He had 10 total tackles and a sack as a season-long starter last year. At Fresno State, Stewart played in 49 games from 1999-2002, recording 198 career tackles, 25 stops for losses and 8 sacks.
Kyle Young, Offensive Line, Virginia Destroyers
Kyle Young is entering his first year with the Virginia Destroyers after playing for the Florida Tuskers and Arizona Rattlers. The Destroyers are leading the league and are undefeated with a 2-0 record. Young started 47-straight games at center for Fresno State.
