Pre-Game Notes
Fresno State captains: 8, 41, 53,
Bulldogs won the toss, deferred to second half. Cal to receive opening kickoff and Fresno State will defend the North goal.
New York Giants quarterback David Carr made it to the season-opener to see little brother, Derek, make his first career start. Kenny Wiggins, another former Bulldog, was also in attendance at the game.
1st Quarter
L.J. Jones intercepted a pass on Cal's first first-down of the game, setting up the Bulldogs with a first-and-10 on the Bear 16-yard line.
Robbie Rouse scored on a 9-yard run for Fresno State's first points of the year. The score came at 13:16.
Cody Wichmann blocked Cal's extra-point attempt at 8:24, which was Fresno State's 58th blocked punt or kick since 2002. That figure is the most in the nation.
Wichmann blocked a second PAT at 5:45.
After Fresno State's first touchdown drive, the `Dogs did not get another first down until Derek Carr hit Devon Wylie on a 56-yard pass on the second-to-last play of the quarter.
Cal outgained the Bulldogs, 226-85 in the first quarter.
2nd Quarter
Kyle Knox tackled Isi Sofele for a loss of one yard at 9:51. It was Fresno State's first tackle behind the line of scrimmage in the game.
Logan Harrell sacked Maynard at 7:11 for a loss of 14 yards. It was Harrell's 13.5 sack of his career.
Cristin Wilson, who started in place of the injured Phillip Thomas at free safety, recovered a fumble in the end zone at 4:16 to give cut Cal's lead down to 19-14.
Fresno State converted just one of six third-down attempts in the first half.
