Four Softball Players Honored by NFCA

STARKVILLE, Miss. - The Fresno State softball team had four student-athletes named to the 2011 National Fastpitch Coaches Association Scholar-Athlete team that was released this week.
Infielder Nicole Angene, infielder/outfielder Vonnie Martin, infielder Brooke Ortiz and outfielder Diane Runge were all named to the NFCA Scholar-Athlete team, which honors student-athletes who achieved a 3.50 GPA during last academic year.
Fresno State has now had 33 honorees on the NFCA Scholar-Athlete teams since the 1997-98 school year.
Runge is now a two-time NFCA Scholar-Athlete, becoming the 11th Bulldog to be a multiple honoree. She had a perfect 4.0 GPA both semesters last year, as did Ortiz.
In addition, this past school year, Fresno State softball had eight players honored as WAC All-Academic selections. That pushes Fresno State's total to 99 WAC All-Academic selections since the Bulldogs joined the league in 1993 and all 99 honorees have been under head coach Margie Wright. Also, five student-athletes were honored on the Dean's List last year, moving that total to 182 honorees under Wright since 1991.
Ortiz led the Bulldogs in the box last year, as she batted a team-high .315 with 52 hits, 25 runs scored and 11 driven in. Ortiz and Angene, who hit seven home runs, were both second team All-WAC selections for the Bulldogs a season ago.
Runge appeared in 37 games for the Bulldogs last season and hit .292 while Martin played in six games as a freshman.
