FRESNO, Calif. - Coming to a new country and adjusting to a new culture is hard enough. Add freshman year of college into the mix and you have total lifestyle change. However, freshman Alex Sheedy from Australia did not miss a beat!
Sheedy is the eighth Australian to play for Fresno State's women's basketball team and has earned a starting spot, starting every single game this season.
Sheedy was the first Bulldog to record a double-double this season. She had a career-high against Cal Poly, scoring 16 points and collecting 10 rebounds.
Sheedy sat down with gobulldogs.com before practice to share a little bit about her life.
GoBulldogs:What is it like having Christmas during the summer time?
Alex Sheedy: It's warm, and really weird to see Christmas decorations with snow and trees. Santa in Australia is in board shorts, flip-flops and sunglasses.
GB:How did you learn how to tie your shoes?
AS: I was a goodie-goodie when I was little and had to be perfect at everything, so my grandma showed me and after that I practiced for five hours a day until I got it right. I started with the bunny ears and then decided I wanted to be like a grown up so I started learning how to do it the other way.
GB:What was your favorite subject in elementary school?
AS: English, because I really like reading and writing. It came natural to me. I read a lot of the magic fly away train stuff.
GB:What is your favorite part about being from Australia?
AS: I like that I can say that I am from Australia because people give me stuff. When I came here in 2009 we were at a college game and I wanted to sit closer so I told the security guard I was from Australia and gave him a little stuffed koala bear and he let me sit court-side.
GB:What is your favorite thing about the United States?
AS: People are friendly, but I don't like the food here. It's cooked differently and seems really processed compared to home.
GB:Give me the names of three objects or things you dislike the most and why?
AS: Math, because I don't understand why I have to learn Algebra. I am never going to use it, but whatever. I really don't like pumpkin, they taste weird and smell weird. We don't really have Halloween in Australia so it's just different with all the pumpkins. I don't like music where people are screaming all the time and you can't understand what they are saying.
GB:What is your favorite part about the human face and why?
AS: They are all different and I like that faces make everyone unique.
GB:What makes you bored?
AS: Doing nothing and homework. Oh and people talking too much for too long, like speeches.
GB:What is your favorite four-legged creature and why?
AS: Tigers, I just think they look really cool.
GB:Do you like the hot or the cold better? Why?
AS: Hot! I really hate the cold and I don't like the rain. I think it's easier to get cool than to heat up.
GB:What do you think would be the hardest thing for you to give up on?
AS: Writing, because it has been something I have done since as long as I have played basketball. I really enjoy writing books and stories. I think about writing my own books someday.
GB:What was the worst punishment you had when you were a child?
AS: My parents wouldn't let me play basketball for two weeks!
GB:What is your favorite movie? How many times have you seen it?
AS: Avatar or any Disney movie. I don't even know how many times I've seen it, but I know it's a lot!
GB:Could you recite all the lyrics to your favorite song?
AS: Probably, I know if I heard it I would be able to. My favorite song is "Fader," by Temper Trap.
GB:What is your greatest achievement so far?
AS: Getting to college or playing for the U19 Gem Squad for two and a half years. We played against Japan, Taiwan and China. It was really cool.
GB:Have you decided on a new year's resolution?
AS: Yes, pass math! I am really bad at math and I just want to get it over with.
