In defining this group of individuals the authors scoured through individuals who were "difference makers" in the sport of softball. How they excelled in college, how they excelled at the ASA Women's Major Fast Pitch level, how they excelled as a player or coach in the pro women's league, how they excelled as a college coach, and how they excelled as a coach internationally or on the Olympic level were determining factors.
"Margie was selected for a number of reasons," said Plummer, who is the former ASA Hall of Fame manager for the ASA National Softball Hall of Fame and an ASA National Softball Hall of Famer. "She is the winningest coach in Division I softball, but also has made an impact in the game as a player and as an international coach in the Olympics and other international events.
"Her record speaks for itself," continued Plummer, who also authored the book "The Game America Plays, Celebrating 75 years of the Amateur Softball Association." She is and continues to be a difference maker at the college level and has left her imprint on the Fresno State softball program and the university. She has had a Hall of Fame career and deserves to be among the Best of the Best. She earned her spot among the Best of the Best. What she uniquely did with it (softball) puts her in this book on a couple of lists as a player, coach and activist who made a significant difference for generations of women who have benefited from her example."
The "Best of the Best - Women's Fast Pitch Softball" is the second book that Plummer and Clarfield have worked on together. In 2004 Clarfield, a practicing clinical psychologist who pitched at the top level men's fastpitch for more than 25 years, authored "Softball's Lefty Legend: Ty Stofflet" with Plummer contributing Ty's record breaking performance at the 1976 Men's World Fast Pitch Championship.
