FRESNO, Calif. (AP) - Jerry Brown scored a career-high 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds as Fresno State rode a strong second half for a 66-55 nonconference victory over Cal State San Marcos on Wednesday night.
"In the second half, we came out hard I think our guys did a much better job in terms of attention to detail," Bulldogs first-year head coach Rodney Terry said. "We had a better game offensively. Defensively we got after it a little better. I was pleased with our sharing of the basketball we had four guys with double figures."
Kevin Olekaibe added 14 points for the Bulldogs (9-11), who outscored the Cougars 21-4 on second-chance points, and senior Jonathan Wills (14 points) and sophomore Tyler Johnson (10 points) also reached the double-digit mark for the 'Dogs.
Daniel Redmon scored 13 points for San Marcos, an NAIA team, and Jacob Ranger added 12.
"We were playing an older, experienced team," Terry noted of the Cougars. "It was a great game for us and in terms of playing against older athletic guys I thought it was a great time for us to see some personnel like that."
Brown had four of Fresno State's 15 offensive rebounds and finished 9 of 13 from the free-throw line. The Cougars (12-9) finished with seven offensive boards.
"Jerry has really competed and really bought into his role with our team," Terry said. "He's scoring more for us offensively. He's the guy that gives a defensive presence down there. He's the guy that takes charges. He's a guy that brings a lot of energy to the full force."
Brown and Kevin Foster helped the Bulldogs build their second-half lead by being active on the offensive glass. Foster's offensive rebound and put-back gave the Bulldogs a 44-35 lead, and two straight buckets by Jonathan Wills made it an 11-point cushion with 8:50 left.
Fresno State's lead eventually grew to 18 points, 60-42, on Olekaibe's second 3-pointer with 5:44 remaining.
