FRESNO, Calif. - For the second week in a row, the Fresno State women's basketball team is receiving votes in the national polls. The Bulldogs received four votes in the Associated Press poll and two votes in the USA Today/Coaches poll.
"It is a great honor to be receiving votes and get that kind of recognition, but we don't focus too much on the polls," said head coach Adrian Wiggins. "We come into each game with the same mindset and effort each week. Our ranking or our opponent's ranking doesn't change our approach or style of basketball."
Last week, the `Dogs saw one vote in the AP poll and it was the first time all season the Bulldogs (17-4, 5-0 WAC) have earned votes in the National Polls. Fresno State has played three ranked opponents this year and went 1-2 earning a win over then-No. 23 Oklahoma. The Bulldogs have lost only four games this season and two of those losses were to teams ranked in the Top 25 polls (No. 4 Stanford and No. 23 USC).
The Bulldogs last received votes on March 8, 2010, where they were ranked 26th in the AP poll and earned 42 votes. In 2010, Fresno State received votes seven weeks in a row and during the preseason.
The last time the `Dogs cracked the Top 25 was in Feb. 10, 1987 when they were ranked No. 21 with 92 points in the USA Today Top 25 Poll.
Fresno State is currently 5-0 in the Western Athletic Conference and in first place with a one game lead over Utah State. The Bulldogs on average are beating WAC opponents by 25 points. The `Dogs hit the road this week to face New Mexico State on Feb. 2 and Louisiana Tech on Feb. 4.
Action returns to the Save Mart Center on Feb. 16 against the Idaho at 7 p.m.
"We Are Your Team!" The Bulldogs hit the road again to face New Mexico State on Feb. 2 at 5:30 p.m. PT. Listen to all the action LIVE with Guy Haberman on ESPN2 790 AM. For more information on tickets call 278-DOGS.
