Bulldogs Fall to Saint Mary's, 5-2

MORAGA, CAlif. - The Fresno State women's tennis team fell to No. 34 Saint Mary's, 5-2 on Sunday at the Tim Korth Tennis Courts in Moraga, Calif.
After yesterday's thrilling win against Hawai'i, the Bulldogs traveled to face Saint Mary's. The day started out with a bang for the `Dogs as they earned the doubles point against the Gaels.
No. 2 doubles team Ashiwarya Agrawal and Olga Kirpicheva earned the first win for the `Dogs against Saint Mary's Jenny Jullien and Jade Frampton, 8-6, to redeem the lost at No. 1 singles where Marianne Jodoin and Tanya Murtagh fell to Elizabeth Searl and Catherine Isip, 8-6. The No. 3 doubles duo, Laura Pola and Bianca Modoc clinched the point for the Bulldogs, beating Carla Lindlar and Catherine Leduc, 9-8, in a back-and-forth match that ended doubles play.
In singles, the Bulldogs' winning streak ended early at No. 2 singles when Kirpicheva fell to Saint Mary's highest ranked singles player, No. 68 Jullien, 6-1, 6-4. At No. 5 singles, Murtagh fell to Leduc, 6-3, 6-0, and Melissa McQueen followed losing to Anna Chkhikvishvili, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 4.
The Bulldogs stayed alive with a win from No. 49 Jodoin over No. 82 Isip, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1 singles. However, that was the last Bulldog win of the day. At No. 3 singles Agrawal pushed Saint's Mary's No. 116th-ranked singles player Frampton to a close second set but was unable to pull out the win, 6-2, 7-6. Bianca Modoc fought to the end for the `Dogs as she took Saint Mary's Carla Lindlar to three sets, but fell in the end, 4-6, 6-0, 6-4.
The Bulldogs return home to hit the courts on Friday, Feb. 17 for another tough match against No. 30 Texas A&M at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center at 1 p.m. The `Dogs will face-off with Texas A&M's three ranked singles players: No. 11 Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar, No. 61 Sun Wen and No. 105 Nazari Urbina.
