FULLERTON, Calif. - The Fresno State softball team lost to a pair of top 10 teams on Friday at the Judi Garman Classic, falling 4-0 to No. 5 Arizona State and 9-1 in five innings to No. 10 Louisiana at Cal State Fullerton's Anderson Family Field.
With the two losses, the Bulldogs are now 1-3 in the tournament and 19-12 overall on the year. The `Dogs look to go out with a win on Saturday, as they are scheduled to play Penn State at 3:30 p.m. if the rain in the forecast stays away.
Fresno State posted just two hits in each of its games on Friday. This comes as a surprise because the `Dogs entered the weekend averaging just under 10 hits and seven runs in their previous eight games. In their three consecutive losses this weekend, the Bulldogs have scored just one total run and only two in the four games of the tournament.
Arizona State broke a scoreless tie in the sixth inning when it scored four runs off three hits and three walks from Bulldog pitcher Mackenzie Oakes. Before that inning, Oakes had allowed just one hit and the senior right-hander fell to 7-3 on the year with the loss.
Fresno State only had the two hits against ASU pitcher Hillary Bach, who improved to 13-0 with the win.
One of those came on the second batter she faced, as Stesha Brazil tripled in the top of the first inning. Fresno State was unable to bring Brazil home and the `Dogs could mount just one hit after that, a third-inning single up the middle by Brenna Moss.
In game two, the Ragin' Cajuns opened things up in the second inning with five runs. Nerissa Myers did the damage, hitting a grand slam down the left-field line.
Michelle Moses got a run back in the fourth on a bunt single that scored Brazil, but UL answered with three more in the fourth and one in the fifth to end the game.
Freshman Kiley Shae Aldridge, making her second career start, drew the loss against Louisiana to fall to 1-1 on the year. Aldridge allowed seven hits and walked three in 3.0 innings as her record fell to 1-1 on the season.
