FRESNO, Calif. - Michelle Moses threw her second-straight one-hitter and recorded her 11th shutout of the season in a dominating performance to lead the Fresno State softball team to a 1-0 win over New Mexico State Friday night at Bulldog Diamond.
This was Moses' sixth start of the year where she has given up only one hit to go along with the two no-hitters she already has under her belt this season. She improved to 19-11 overall on the year and continued her domination against the WAC.
In eight league starts and 10 appearances, Moses is 8-1 with a 1.36 ERA, helping Fresno State to a 9-2 WAC record and 29-17 overall mark after Friday's gem.
"I'm just trying to come out and keep them to as little runs as possible," Moses said. "We're just doing what we need to do in practice and staying focused is what I am trying to do."
The one-hit Moses allowed Friday was to the first batter she faced in the game. NM State's (20-25, 1-12 WAC) Amber Olive hit a comebacker that bounced off Moses' out-stretched glove and into an infield gap. After that, the Aggies were unable to mount anything against her.
"I thought she pitched a really good game," head coach Margie Wright said. "I think when we really needed her to come through, she turned it up."
Moses finished the game with six strikeouts and just two walks. She threw first-pitch strikes to 20 of the 24 batters she faced and of her 92 pitches in the game, 68 were strikes.
"Our ultimate goal all the time is to start ahead," Moses said of her being able to work ahead in the count on Friday. "You are definitely more confident when you start ahead than behind, so that's something I'm focusing on a lot is starting ahead and hitting my spots."
Fresno State's one run was scored in the third inning on a two-out infield single from Brooke Ortiz that plated Mario Sio from third base.
The Bulldogs are now 20-7 at home this season and return Saturday to the Diamond for a doubleheader with the Aggies, starting at 3 p.m.
Saturday is Fresno State's ninth annual Domestic Violence Awareness Day and the Bulldogs will be wearing purple jersey's to bring awareness to the cause.
