Baseball Drops Road Contest To Broncos

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Fresno State baseball team began their four-game road trip with a mid-week loss against Santa Clara, 9-5 Tuesday afternoon at Stephen Schott Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif.
With a WAC opening series looming, the Bulldogs (14-14) used six pitchers on the day, staffing the game from the beginning. Santa Clara improved to 17-9 overall with the win.
The Bulldogs opened up the game with two quick runs in the first inning. After hits by Pat Hutcheson and Aaron Judge, Trent Garrison followed with a two-run double.
Santa Clara tied the game in the second inning, scoring two unearned runs off starting pitcher Gene Escat. The Broncos added to the lead in the fifth inning, scoring four runs to take a 6-2 advantage. Santa Clara tacked on three more runs in the seventh to give the Broncos a 9-2 cushion.
Fresno State scored three runs in the ninth after Jordan Luplow doubled and Chris Mariscal drove in Luplow. Hutcheson kept the inning alive with his third hit of the day, followed by a double by Jordan Brink to score two runs.
Hutcheson led the offense, going 3-for-5 with a stolen base from the leadoff spot. Garrison finished the day 1-for-3 with two RBI, Luplow went 1-for-3 with a double and run scored and Brink went 1-for-4 with a double and two RBI.
The Bulldogs have a travel day on Wednesday as they head to the islands and prepare for a three-game WAC opening series against Hawai'i beginning Thursday night. The Bulldogs and Rainbows play a 9 p.m. PT game on Thursday and Friday night and a 4 p.m. PT game on Saturday.
