FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State men's and women's basketball teams opened up the 2014-15 season with the Red and White Hoops Night, a fun Tuesday evening in the Save Mart Center giving the Red Wave a first preview of the Bulldog hoops teams.
"I think it was fun to be out here and especially share this evening with our men's team," head women's coach Jaime White said. "To be able to have our girls play live with the lights on and in front of our fans is good for them."
The evening featured intrasquad scrimmages for both teams, a 3-point and half-court shooting contest with both the men and women and a dunk contest for the men.
"We got a great mixture of guys this season," men's head coach Rodney Terry told the crowd about his team. "It's going to be a fun team to work with. We got athleticism, got speed and we'll be able to get up and down the court this year."
The evening started off with the women's intrasquad scrimmage.
Fans got a look at redshirt freshman center Bego Faz Davalos and what she can bring to the team this season inside in the post. Faz Davalos blocked a pair of shots in the five-minute scrimmage and had one bucket in the paint.
"As we saw, Bego is going to be a nice post player for us," White told Red and White Hoops Night MC Paul Loeffler during the scrimmage.
After the women's scrimmage, the two teams competed in a 3-point shooting contest where Alex Sheedy from the women's team tied with Marvelle Harris from the men's team with 15 made three's apiece.
The two then had a shoot-off, where Sheedy despite getting hot at the end and hitting her last five shots was edged by Harris by one basket.
In the half-court shooting contest, Cezar Guerrero from the men's team stole the show by making five shots in a row from mid court. That caught a big rise from the Red Wave in attendance.
Then after the men's intrasquad scrimmage that featured a ton of dunking, the night ended with more high-flying action in the men's dunk contest. Sophomore forward Karachi Edo won the dunk contest, beating freshman guard Isaiah Bailey in a final-round dunk off.
The celebrity judges for the dunk contest were:
Joyce Capequick - member of the very first women's basketball team in 1963
Paul Ladwig - Fresno State Senior Associate Athletic Director
Jaleesa Ross - Fresno State's all-time leading scorer (women's basketball)
Teresa Sardin from KSEE 24 Sunrise Morning Show
Shannon Swillis - Member of the men's basketball team in 2000-01
George Takata from the KSEE 24 Sunrishe Morning Show
Victor E. Bulldog II
Fans can get one more look at both teams on the same day before the season begins, as on Nov. 9 there will be a doubleheader of exhibition games at the Save Mart Center. The women will face Notre Dame De Namur at 2 p.m. followed immediately by the men who square off against UC Santa Cruz at 4 p.m.
