San Jose, Calif. - The Fresno State volleyball team (6-19, 1-10) opened up week 10 with Thursday night's match at San Jose State (4-21, 1-10) and the Spartan Gym.
The Bulldogs fought the Spartans past regulation in the third set before the Spartans pulled out the 25-19 clincher, while the home team also took the first and third sets by 25-19 and 25-20 counts.
"Statistically we played our best volleyball on the defensive and offensive side of the ball with exception to our serving and passing," said head coach Lauren Netherby-Sewell. "We made poor errors at bad times and that will be rectified Saturday. Not having Maci was a huge blow to us but we need others to learn and step up to make the big plays she can. I liked the effort out of my outside hitters tonight. We lack substitutes and they have to carry a big load. But I thought they played like champions all the way through. Lauren Torres is playing out of position due to injuries and put up some massive, high level blocks for us. Our young ones have a ton of potential."
Team-wise, San Jose State had advantages in the final comparisons in digs (59-52), aces (9-1). Fresno State owned the hitting comparisons (.237-.235), assists (49-48) and blocks (9-8), while the teams were tied in kills (51-51).
Topping the Fresno State offense, senior outside hitter Jaimee Lee-Morrow tied the teams in kills (11) and led in points (12). Freshman Carly Scarbrough also tied with a team high in kills (11) and was second points (11.5).
Junior outside hitter Zana Bowens landed 10 kills with a team high of 16 digs and 11 points in the match Thursday. She was one of only two `Dogs to tally a double-double. Morrow also earned that mark with kills (11) and digs (11) The offense also counted seven kills from freshman Lauren Torres and six kills from senior Molly Pearson.
On defense, sophomore libero Maggie Eppright added to the digs column with 10. Top Spartan performers included Nandyala Gama (19 kills, .289),Tyanna Roy (18 kills, .262, 3 digs), Allison Meehan (38 assists, 12 digs, 3 kills), Yavianliz Rosado (23 digs, 7 assists),
In the first set, the Spartans jumped out to a 10-4 lead and did not relinquish the lead. Fresno State did tie the set at 17-17, but San José State used a 4-0 run to open the set back up and won 25-19 on three consecutive Teyanna Roy kills. The `Dogs tallied 10 kills at the end of the first set hitting .188.
In the second set the `Dogs were in command, hitting .350 and recording 17 kills, the Spartans only lead once in the entire match 5-4. The `Dogs went on a 6-0 run to go up 9-16 lead by kills from Morrow, Torres and M. Pearson. The Spartans started to make a comeback, but after a quick Bulldog timeout, the `Dogs were able to take control of the game and finish it 25-17.
In the third set, Fresno State and San Jose State started going back and forth with points. The `Dogs jumped out to an early lead, 9-6 forcing San Jose State's head coach to take a timeout. Spartans went on a 7-0 run after the timeout, before the `Dogs could make a stop. A kill by Scarbrough made the score 13-9 for the Spartans, but the `Dogs couldn't take control of the game and fell 20-25.
In the fourth set Bowens opened with a kill, to put the `Dogs up 1-0. San Jose State continued on a 6-0 run behind three kills from Teyanna Roy. The Bulldogs hit .214 in the fourth lead by strong performances by two of the Bulldog outside hitters. The Spartans won the final set on Gama's 19th kill of the night, ending with a score of 25-19.
