`Dogs Compete with the Wolf Pack

RENO, Nev. - In a match that featured 27 tied scores between the two squads, all four sets were close. The `Dogs fought hard, pushing set four to extra points in the match against the Wolf Pack. Nevada claimed the first and second set (25-22, 25, 21). The `Dogs charged back and won the third set in a strong fashion beating the Pack 25-18. Set four ended in theatrical fashion with the `Dogs falling 29-27 in a close set.
"It was an exciting match, said head coach Lauren Netherby-Sewell. "We had some really good performances out of our freshman and that is more than impressive. Nevada really came after our passers and we couldn't maintain our lead in the fourth set which was a missed opportunity."
Saturday's match extended a two-match win streak that the Wolf Pack has over the `Dogs. Before the 2014 season, Fresno State had a series win streak that included 15 straight victories sets after four sweeps in 2012 and '13, and a 3-2 and 3-1 victory.
Team-wise Fresno State held an edge in digs (44-39) and hitting (.213-.179); Nevada owned advantages in aces (11-4), kills (53-52); and the two teams tied in blocks (3-3).
The Fresno State offense featured a two-way tie in the match high for kills between junior Zana Bowens (11, .125) and freshman Lauren Torres (11, .333).
Bowens sported her 14th, double-double of her career, with 11 kills and 12 digs on the night.
Freshman Carly Scarbrough added 10 kills to the match, hitting .250 in the course of four sets.
Other Bulldog stat leaders included junior setter Jelena Jovanovic (35 assists), sophomore libero Maggie Eppright (10 digs) and senior Katie Pearson (5 kills).
Nevada's top players included Tessa Lea'ea (13 kills, .200, 16 points), Madison Morell (15 kills), Sam Willoughby (8 kills, .182), Lyndsey Anderson (34 assists) and Madison Foley (12 kills, 10 assists).
"We look forward to getting Maci Murdock back next week and hope we can continue to improve on the small things we have in the last two weeks,"Netherby-Sewell said.
Looking ahead, Fresno State plays at home hosting Colorado State (23-1, 11-0) on Thursday, Nov. 6 and Wyoming (19-5, 8-3) Saturday, Nov. 8. The match will be broadcast live locally on the radio on 790 AM The Deuce, and online streamed at www.GoBulldogs.com/Videos.
