Swanson Named Ray Guy Award Nominee

Augusta, Ga. - The Augusta Sports Council announced Friday morning that Fresno State punter Garrett Swanson is one of 80 nominees for the 2014 Ray Guy Award, which recognizes the nation's top collegiate punter.
Swanson, a junior from Riverside, Calif., is averaging 40.5 yards per punt on 53 punts in eight games played. He has placed 12 kicks inside the 20 and forced 16 fair catches while having zero attempts blocked.
On Sept. 13, the junior punter registered 12 punts, one shy of school record, for a season-high 495 yards against Nebraska. Both marks lead the Mountain West heading into week 10 of the 2014 season. Additionally, Swanson netted his season-best punt, 65 yards, in the clash vs. the Big Ten opponent.
The kinesiology-exercise science major sports a 3.52 GPA and is expected to complete his degree in the spring of 2016 - another factor in the council's nomination process.
The list will be narrowed to ten semifinalists to be announced on November 14. Following the semifinalists announcement, a national body of Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) sports information directors, coaches, media representatives and previous Ray Guy Award winners will vote for the top three finalists, who will be identified on November 24. The voting body will then cast ballots to select the winner.
The presentation of the Ray Guy Award will be featured on The Home Depot College Football Awards live on Thursday, December 11 at 7:30 pm ET on ESPN. The show, hosted by ESPN's Chris Fowler, Lee Corso, Kirk Herbstreit and Desmond Howard will feature live presentation of nine player awards, along with the recipients of Disney's Spirit Award, The Home Depot Coach of the Year Award, the NCFAA (National College Football Awards Association) Contributions to College Football Award, and student-athletes selected to the Walter Camp All-America Team.
