Head Coach Tim DeRuyter
On what he said to the players in the locker room...
"I told them that I was extremely disappointed in the way that we played. It started with the coaches and with me, tonight we got out coached and out played; there is no excuses for it. We are going to pour through that tape and get things fixed. We have some guys on this team giving great effort and I feel deeply disappointed for those guys. We don't have 11 guys at a time or 22 guys at a time giving great effort. We have to figure out as coaches why we are not able to execute and we have to get that fixed."
On the run defense...
"They were running the same plays that we practice. We were trying to figure out the fits and find out what was missing. A lot of their plays were inside runs and they were blocking it a lot of different ways. We will look at the tape and find out what was happening with that. We had a bad call with one of our plays, it was a blitz call and they creased us and made a big play. The other plays were plays that we should have fit and that we fit in practice and we have to find out what happened when we look at the tape."
On the lack of defensive adjustments after big run plays....
"When you get everyone packed in and there is a guy that is one-one with our guy, we have to make that play. Their guy was beating our guy and we have to figure out why. We need to make sure that we are coaching it correctly; and if we are then maybe we are going to have to get someone else in there, because tonight's play isn't acceptable.
On Greenlee's struggle to get comfortable...
"We had a game plan to get him comfortable. We planned to get our run game established early, get some screen passes and relatively easy throws to start the game. I'll have to meet with the offensive staff , but from what it looked like to me, Zack wasn't keeping his eyes down the field. He would get at the top of his drop and start looking at the rush and young quarterbacks will do that. I thought that he had some good runs, but he has to be confident that he has protection and throw the ball where throws need to be made. He has shown that in practice, but again a young guy out there starting for the first time against real competition creates hesitation and doubt; we are going to have to get him through that.
On if Greenlee will start next week...
"We will watch the tape and make some evaluations. Obviously he didn't play well enough today, it wasn't just him, we had some guys dropping balls as well. But we will make the evaluation as we go through the week."
On what do you say to your young quarterback...
"We have to fix things. We have to be able to look in the mirror and figure out how we can own this thing and get better as coaches and as players. Zack is an accountable guy and he's going to look at that tape and see where he should have kept his eyes and hopefully we can get that corrected. If not, we will have to look in a different direction. We have a lot of confidence in him that we can get that fixed."
On what he found frustrating about tonight's game, besides the score....
"Just the way we played overall. We started the game the way we wanted, the defense forced them to a 3-and-out, we got a great punt return by Derron and the offense took advantage and scored. I don't know if our guys thought that it was going to be easy at that point, but we knew we were going to be in a ball game. Then they got a couple of runs on us and we still aren't tackling very well and we have to get that fixed."
On what they knew about Wyoming's Brian Hill...
"We knew he was a good player, he ran last week after the starter got hurt. Hill came in the game and showed he was a good back. Tonight he ran hard and we had guys that he made miss, and I give him credit, but have to be better."
On the team's effort...
"I don't know if we have guys giving up. But if we do have guys giving up then we're going to have to say next; we can't tolerate that. But I think when we have young guys giving effort but not being good enough they get discouraged and it could translate into them not giving effort. We have to determine what is going on there. If those guys that are playing can't get guys down then we will have to go to the next guys."
On starting the season 0-3 and now currently on an 0-3 run...
"Losing is losing, I don't put it into perspective. I'm just frustrated, it was frustrating two weeks ago to lose and it's frustrating tonight. When you know you can play better than we performed, that's frustrating. If you play to your capability and lose then you probably aren't as frustrated, but you're still upset that you lost. Tonight we clearly didn't play to our capabilities and as coaches we have got to get that fixed."
On feelings about the game going into tonight...
"I felt good about this game, because we had good crisp practices this week. I thought we had a good beat on what we were facing. Give them credit they executed their offense; they didn't do a whole lot of things that we didn't plan for in practice. They out executed us, they out coached us.
On what's going through the mind after a loss like this...
"It's not a good feeling at all. I feel like we were ready for the game, but nothing went as planned. I really don't have the answer to what went wrong. We have to go back to the film and look to see what wrong."
On what you say to a young QB after a game like this...
"We have to help Zack. It's a whole offense kind of thing. There were a lot of dropped balls out there. It's not just Zack. I am going to tell him to keep his head up and we're going to pick him up. The offense is going to pick him up. We can't have another performance like this. It's the whole offense as a unit."
On message to the team after tonight...
"Finish strong. That is really all I can say. We have to play for pride now. We have to finish strong. 1-0 week is what I'm telling them and try to finish every week."
On how he felt about the game...
"Embarrassed. The overall game, the effort in the 4th quarter, I was just embarrassed."
If he believed it was just an overall lack of effort throughout the game...
"I'll have to go back and watch the film but late in the game like that is about playing for pride. If they're busting runs like that play after play, something is not going right so like coach said, we still have to watch the film. My initial sense was that we have to start questioning some people hard out there, if you're giving it your all and if you're trying to get off the block or make the tackle or not. I'm not going to get too upset with the heart and effort part until I see the film."
On if he spoke in the locker room...
"No not yet. I haven't spoken to my teammates yet."
On his vantage point while Fresno State was on defense...
"They didn't really do much that we haven't practiced. I don't know if they ran maybe two or three plays that we didn't practice in practice. They executed it well and we didn't fit it right all the time. Like coach said, missed tackles. My perspective is a little different, my eyes are in a different spot so I can't see exactly what happened every time so again we just have to get back to the film to truly find out what went wrong."
On how he felt about being tied with Boise in the 4th quarter last game against a pretty good team compared to the effort given this week against Wyoming. If there just wasn't a good connection or they didn't prepare properly...
"I wish I had the answer to that. I felt that we practiced well. Coaches did a good job helping us take care of our bodies a couple days off over the bye week. We watched a lot of film on them and we practiced well. The effort in practice was there and that's what really frustrating, I don't understand why the effort in practice is there. Yeah we're still going to make mistakes, that's going to happen when you're learning a new game plan against a new offense but the effort was there but it's just not translating over to the game and we have to figure out why that is."
