FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State women's basketball team and first-year head coach Jaime White open up the 2014-15 season on Sunday with an exhibition game against Notre Dame De Namur.
The game is part of a Sunday doubleheader inside the Save Mart Center. The women's team starts it at 2 p.m. and are followed by the men's game at 4 p.m. against UC Santa Cruz.
Although this is the first exhibition game of the season for the Bulldog women, it is not their first action playing together under White who was named the 10th head coach in program history back in April. This August, the team went on an 11-day, four-game tour of Australia where the team got a head-start on the year.
"We're excited to get started," White said. "We went to Australia earlier this year and that kind of kick-started everything. We got some early exposure in playing some games, being able to hang out with each other you get to learn a bit more about each other so that really kick-started everything."
White took over a program rich in history, highlighted by the recent success of reaching seven-straight NCAA Tournaments. Last season, the Bulldogs went 22-11 overall and Fresno State returns two starters and 10 letterwinners from that squad that won the 2014 Mountain West Tournament.
"Our goals for this season are just to get better every day," White said. "We love to compete, love to be able to play here in front of our home crowd, but also we have high goals to play on the road and be successful the road."
Senior forward Alex Sheedy was the lone Bulldog and one of just five players in the conference selected to the 2014-15 Preseason All-Mountain West Team. She enters the year needing just 138 points to become the 22nd player in program history to score 1,000 points in a career.
"Having Alex Sheedy back is a big deal," White said. "She brings a lot of confidence, leadership and a lot of maturity to our team. She's really bringing probably more leadership than anything, so it's been kind of nice to see her step into that role a little bit more."
Last season, the Bulldogs defeated Notre Dame De Namur 81-42 in their lone exhibition game.
