COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Fresno State senior forward Alex Sheedy has been named Mountain West Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
The native of Moe, Australia, averaged 18.5 points and seven rebounds in two wins last week while shooting 39.4 percent (13-of-33) from the field. She was also 10-of-12 (83.3 percent) from the foul line.
Last Friday, the Bulldogs faced Saint Mary's, which came into the Save Mart Center riding a six-game winning streak, where Sheedy squared off against a trio of her Australian counterparts. After allowing the Gaels to level the game late in the second half, the senior refused to let her team lose and came up with big points down the stretch in the 60-56 win while recording her fourth double-double of the year with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
Two days later, she scored 19 points in a 57-52 win over Cal State Fullerton. In the final seconds, she came up with a crucial block, and grabbed the loose ball before being fouled. With only a three-point lead, the senior seal the game by knocking down both free throws.
During the second half against CSF, Sheedy became the 22nd Bulldog in program history to reach 1,000 career points. She needed only 14 points to reach the mark entering the game.
Sheedy and the Bulldogs are next in action at the Save Mart Center on Dec. 19 as they host Bethesda University. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m., PT.
