WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Sacramento State snapped No. 24 Fresno State's six-game win streak Wednesday night with a 2-1 win in 10 innings at Raley Field. A streak the 'Dogs started after they fell to the Hornets on Feb. 19 in Fresno.
Fresno State (9-3, 3-0 MW) struggled to put runners across the plate all night despite having its leadoff hitter reach base in six of the first eight frames.
The Hornets could not hold the clean sheet any longer in the eighth once Jordan Luplow sparked the offense by providing the Bulldogs their first extra bases hit after Taylor Tempel singled to lead the eighth. As Tempel rounded second on Luplow's double he slowed, preventing him for rounding third. With a sacrifice fly, Trent Woodward plated Tempel for the games only run and RBI for the 'Dogs, although Luplow would be caught advancing to third on the play to register an unconventional double play.
After being held scoreless all game long as well, Sacramento State responded with the tying run in the bottom half of the eighth. Derick Velazquez allowed a leadoff walk that turned out to be the run that pushed the game to extra innings, aided by an error on the potential third out by Chris Mariscal.
In the bottom of the 10th, the Hornets needed three at bats to win the game. The leadoff hitter singled up the middle against Jake Shull, the following sacrifice bunt turned into a fielders choice when Shull attempted to cut off the lead run at second with a throw that sailed high, allowing the lead run to reach third. Starting centerfielder David Del Grande lifted the Hornets over the 'Dogs with a walk-off RBI single to secure the 2-1 win on the next at bat.
Woodward led the 'Dogs from the plate going 2-for-3 with one RBI.
Starting pitcher Will Munro pitched 5.2 innings, allowing just four hits and no earned runs. Reliever Jake Shull (1-1) was charged with the loss.
Fresno state will have a day off before they open its second Mountain West conference series at Air Force. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m. local pacific time.
