No. 72 `Dogs Outlasted by Michigan State, 4-3

BERKELEY, Calif. - The No. 72-ranked Fresno State women's tennis team fell 4-3 to Michigan State in Monday's consolation match of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend held at the Hellman Tennis Complex on the campus of University of California.
The Bulldogs came out strong, claiming the doubles point behind wins at No. 1 and No. 3. Sisters Maiar Sherif Ahmed and Rana Sherif Ahmed teamed in the top doubles match to defeat Erin Faulkner and Athena Trouillot 6-2, before Aishwarya Agrawal and Sofya Malysheva clinched the opening point with a 6-3 win over Lexi Baylis and Emily Meyers.
In singles play, No. 47 Sophie Watts knocked off Faulkner in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 to put the Bulldogs up 2-0. Maiar Sherif Ahmed then made it 3-0 with a 6-2, 6-0 victory in the No. 2 match over Aslina Chua.
Needing one point to clinch the match, Fresno State was unable to sustain its momentum. Trouillot began the Spartans' rally in the No. 5 match with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Anneka Watts. Tanya Murtagh then fell 6-4, 6-2 at No. 6 to Emily Meyers as Michigan State pulled within one.
After narrowly dropping the first set, 7-5 to Lexi Baylis, Agrawal dropped the second set 6-3 as Michigan State evened the match at 3-3. In the final match of the day at No. 4, Malysheva claimed the opening set 7-6(2), but Catherine Parenteau responded by grabbing the second set 6-2 before taking the deciding set 6-3 to give the Spartans the win.
The Bulldogs open up their home schedule on Jan. 31 with a pair of dual matches as they host Cal Poly at 11 a.m., PT, and Fresno City College at 5 p.m., at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center.
