FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State (4-8-1, 3-2-1 MW) soccer team is on a three-game winning streak after defeating Air Force (4-9-1, 2-3-1 MW) 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at the Fresno State Soccer and Lacrosse Field. This is the second-straight shutout for the Bulldogs after defeating Mountain West leader Colorado College 1-0 on Friday.
"Air Force is an extremely resilient and athletic team," head coach Brian Zwaschka said. "I have never known them to stop fighting."
Throughout a hard-fought battle, the Bulldogs were able to capitalize on a busy box when sophomore Maria Gomez rebounded her own shot to put one in the net for her second goal of the season.
"Just seeing all my teammates work hard really pushed me to work harder so I could push with them and be aggressive with them," Gomez said.
Gomez had six shots in the match, the most in a game this season by a Bulldog, giving her a team-leading 25 in 2015.
"Maria [Gomez] is a tremendous sparkplug for us," Zwaschka said. "She has that spark of creativity that we need in order to change the game, especially when we have a game this tight, and certainly today, she did."
During the game, Air Force had a body on Fresno State's Myra Delgadillo at all times, which gave the other Bulldogs opportunities to find lanes. Delgadillo leads the team with 11 shots on goal and was on a three-game scoring streak going into the match, the first time for a Bulldog since Sept. 2009.
Bulldog freshman goalkeeper Marie Berwinkel-Kottmann earned her second-straight shutout while adding seven saves for the second time this season, giving her a total of 36 over eight matches on the year. Berwinkel-Kottmann has improved her record to 3-2-0.
The Bulldogs outshot the Falcons 22-13, a season-best for Fresno State, with 11 being on the frame.
Seven different 'Dogs we able to get shots on goal during the match, keeping Falcon goalkeeper Alex Kahalley busy saving 10 goals, the most for an opponent this season.
This is the first time since Oct.-Nov. 2013 that Fresno State has won three games in a row.
"I think that the biggest thing was that we were very unified from what was going on on the field to the players on the bench who were very uplifting and who impacted the game," Zwaschka added. "I was really proud of the bench today."
