FRESNO, Calif. - The No. 8 Fresno State equestrian team capped the two-day tri-meet against No. 7 Texas A&M at the Student Horse Center. The Bulldogs (3-4) tied the Aggies with a raw score of 9-9, but Texas A&M took the match with a tiebreaker score of 1493.25 to the ‘Dogs 1347.50 on Saturday.
"I am really proud of how the Hunt Seat team rode this entire weekend," head coach Eric Hubbard said. "It was a tough lose today and we have realized that the small mistakes are big in the overall score. We have some things to work on as we head into the spring season."
Of eight chances to earn Most Outstanding Player honors this weekend, Fresno State took home six. Sophomore Kylina Chalack earned three overall with a pair coming on Friday and one in Equitation Over Fences on Saturday. The additional MOP accolades were claimed by Sydney Elliott (Horsemanship), Taylor Brown (Reining) and Taylor Dixon (Horsemanship).
"We had some good rides and I am proud of our Most Outstanding Players," Hubbard added. Kylina [Chalack] had a really strong weekend, her Hunt Seat teammates rallied around that success and let the momentum push them."
Fresno State was coming off its sixth home opening win since 2006 on Friday while facing New Mexico State. The Bulldogs edged the Aggies 12-8 while sweeping all four MOP honors.
The Bulldogs first set of competition got underway around noon on Saturday, competing against the Texas A&M Aggies in Equitation Over Fences and Reining. In the Western arena, Fresno State was swept 4-0 as the Hunt Seat team walked away with a 4-1 win over fences. Paige Pastorino (77), Alexandra Dirickson (81), Chalack (82) and Sierra Swaffar (82) outscored their opponents to leave the ‘Dogs trailing by only one point.
While ahead 5-4, Texas A&M gained a one point advantage at the conclusion Horsemanship (3-2) as Elliott (71) and Dixon (74.5) both grabbed a point for the ‘Dogs.
In the final event of the day, Fresno State rallied back to tie the score 9-9 after Savannah Bernard (67), Genna Fogelberg (70) and Swaffar (65) gave the ‘Dogs a 3-1 advantage in Equitation on the Flat.
Highlighting Fresno State's two-game home slate was Chalack's score of 87 on the flat and 85 over fences against New Mexico State along with Dixon's 74.5 in Horsemanship and Brown's 73 in Reining on Saturday.
Only one national standing ahead of the Bulldogs, Texas A&M swept both matchups at the Student Horse Center over the weekend. The Southeastern Conference institution owns a 2-1 record after opening the season one point shy of topping No. 1 Georgia on the road.
The ‘Dogs fall slate will conclude with a trip to the AQHA Horsemanship Challenge (Nov. 19) in Oklahoma City, Okla. Fresno State will take the reins again in February with a pair of road trips before returning to its home dirt for the lone spring matchup at the Student Horse Center starting on March 18.
