FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State (2-8-1, 1-2-1 MW) soccer team got up early on Boise State (3-7-3, 1-3-0 MW) and didn't look back, besting the Broncos 4-1 on Sunday afternoon at the Fresno State Soccer and Lacrosse Field.
"A lot of the things we have worked on came together and to see so many people contribute on both sides of the ball was tremendous," Fresno State head coach Brian Zwaschka said. "I think that our focus and organization was really spot on."
In the sixth minute, Bulldog sophomore Maria Gomez received a corner kick inside the box from junior Amanda Nunes and placed it just past Boise State goalkeeper Tara Fisher for her first career goal. The assist was Nunes' second of the season.
Just 20 seconds later, Fresno State senior Fanny Johansson passed a long ball to sophomore Myra Delgadillo to score her first of two goals in the game.
"I just pressed high and I felt that when the ball was swinging across I just needed to press it," Delgadillo said. "With my high press, I would just go through, get the ball and score."
The Broncos were able to answer in the 26th minute off a corner kick to bring the score to 2-1 at the half.
"They're a good passing team and they do a good job getting you stretched out," Zwaschka said. "Their interchange is always difficult to deal with because they have players who can play in different positions so they can switch around a lot."
At the half, Fresno State led Boise State in shots (12-6), shots on goal (6-3) and corner kicks (4-2).
As the second half got started, Fresno State kept up its aggressiveness and attacked the Broncos similar to the beginning of the match. In the 50th minute, the Bulldogs were in control of the ball at the top of the box as junior Alyssa Holsworth nudged the ball to senior Sam Brechmann who scored her first collegiate goal.
Just four minutes later, Nunes took the ball down the right side of the pitch and kicked it hard off the left post, which sent the ball to Delgadillo who kicked it into the right side of the net for her third goal of the weekend, season and career.
"Obviously we are very excited for Myra [Delgadillo]," Zwaschka said, "But I'd be lying if I said I was surprised. We know that not only is she capable of that, but we have other people alongside her who are capable of that as well. It's good to see her in full health at the moment and hopefully there is more to come."
Freshman goalkeeper Marie Berwinkel-Kottmann started her second-straight game for the 'Dogs, saving seven shots to give her a team-high 26 in six games on the season.
In the match, Fresno State owned advantage in shots (21-15) and shots on goal (12-8), both season-highs for the 'Dogs. 11 different Bulldogs got off shots in the game with seven of them getting shots on goal.
