COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - For the second-straight game, the Fresno State (3-8-1, 2-2-1 MW) soccer team scored early and hung on for a 1-0 victory over Colorado College (6-7-1, 4-1-0 MW) on Thursday afternoon at Stewart Field in Colorado Springs, Colo.
"We played with a lot of discipline against a very good team and made sure we had a clear game plan," Fresno State head coach Brian Zwaschka said. "The combination of the two was the answer. I'm really proud of the team for showing the ability to execute."
For the third-straight game, Bulldog sophomore Myra Delgadillo put one in the net from 14 yards away in the 33rd minute to give her four goals on the season and her second-straight game-winning goal. Sophomore Peyton Cline recorded her first assist of the season on the play.
"Our strong midfield, especially [Alyssa] Holsworth, was key today," Delgadillo said. "We were able to shut down their transitions breaking forward."
Both teams were evenly matched throughout the game, with the 'Dogs owning slight advantages in shots (15-10) and shots on goal (5-3), which are the least amount allowed by the Bulldogs' defense this season.
"We were playing against a team that is really good at keeping games close and showing success late in games," Zwaschka added. "We knew we had to be sharp and make sure that we didn't give them clear looks."
Fresno State freshman goalkeeper Marie Berwinkel-Kottmann started her third-straight game for the Bulldogs, saving three goals in her first shutout, and the Bulldogs' second, this season. Berwinkel-Kottmann has now played the majority of the minutes protecting the net for Fresno State this season and has 29 saves in seven games and owns a 2-2-0 record.
"We had a lot of communication," sophomore defender Sara Jo Ciapponi said. "We were all on the same page throughout the game and we were aware of where their players were at all times."
The Bulldogs held Colorado College standout Sarah Schweiss to five shots with two on goal, snapping her four-game scoring streak and handing the Tigers their first Mountain West loss of the season. This is the first time in three meetings that Fresno State has defeated Colorado College.
"We just made sure to put extra focus on [Schweiss'] positioning and track her well on crosses and corners," junior defender Angie Weiner said.
Fresno State sophomore Maria Gomez led the Bulldogs offensively with five shots and leads the team this season with 19. Delgadillo added four shots and junior Alyssa Holsworth had three, bringing them to a total of 18 and 17, respectively. Delgadillo now has 10 points on the season.
"I think the most important thing is that the players are recognizing how to provide for Myra [Delgadillo]," Zwaschka said. "She's been reliable in terms of finishing and we are doing a nice job setting her up."
The 'Dogs are on a two-game winning streak after beating Boise State 4-1 last Sunday. The win keeps Fresno State in contention for the Mountain West Championships in November.
"We are sticking to the idea of one game at a time," Zwaschka added. "We're excited that we were able to pick up a win and bring it back home and play in front of the Red Wave. We just want to keep doing the right things."
Fresno State hosts Air Force (4-8-1, 2-2-1 MW) on Sunday at 1 p.m. PT at the Fresno State Soccer and Lacrosse Field east of Bulldog Stadium. The Falcons were shut out 1-0 by San Jose State (6-5-2, 4-1-0 MW) on Thursday afternoon.
