FRESNO, Calif. – The Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced the draws on Wednesday for the 2015 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollege Championships. Maiar Sherif Ahmed’s opening match will be against Ohio State’s Francesca Di Lorenzo. Match time is set for 7:30 a.m., PT at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
Ahmed, a sophomore from Cairo, Egypt earned one of the 10 at-large spots by finishing as the runner-up at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships. On her way to the championship match, ninth-seeded Ahmed defeated No. 16 Klara Fabikova (Cal), the No. 2 seed, in the quarterfinals and No. 17 Caroline Doyle (Stanford), the No. 3 seed, in the semifinals. The Bulldog defeated both opponents in straight sets.
She enters the tournament ranked No. 104 and has been defeated just twice this fall. Last weekend she won the Jack Kramer Invitational singles championship.
The Buckeye enters the tournament after receiving a USTA wildcard. She was ranked as the ITA’s No. 1 newcomer in the preseason and is 4-1 this fall.
The 32-person singles field features many of the nation’s top players, including eight of ITA’s preseason top 10 and 15 who are ranked in the top 25. Results can be found at itatennis.com.
