FRESNO, Calif. - Behind three players in double figures, the Fresno State women's basketball team earned its first win of the season topping Fresno Pacific 78-33 on Tuesday evening at the Save Mart Center.
Winning its fourth consecutive home opener, Fresno State (1-1) was led by Toni Smith as the senior forward notched a double-double, the second of her career, tying her career-best with 19 points and grabbing 12 rebounds.
Sophomore center Bego Faz Davalos also posted a double-double finishing with 13 points and corralling 13 boards, including seven offensive, and added three blocks, three steals and two assists. Senior guards Shauqunna Collins and Brittany Aikens chipped in 11 and eight points, respectively. Fresno Pacific was led by Taylor Caspers with 10 points and four rebounds. Taylor Martin added seven points.
The `Dogs jumped on the Sunbirds from the get-go outscoring the crosstown visitors 25-7 in the first quarter thanks to points from six different Bulldogs. Fresno State took an 11-2 lead after four minutes of play on a layup from Smith, before FPU answered with a 3-pointer to close the gap to six. That would be as close as the game would get as the `Dogs closed out the quarter on a 14-2 run capped with an Aikens 3-pointer.
Fresno State continued to widen their lead in the second quarter scoring eight of the first 10 points to take a sizable 33-9 lead. Continuing to make life difficult offensively for the Sunbirds, the `Dogs held a 42-17 halftime lead, holding Fresno Pacific to 38 percent shooting from the field in the half. After a mostly even third quarter, the Bulldogs closed out the final quarter with a bang with a 24-5 edge to win by a final margin of 78-33.
The Bulldogs shot 39.1 percent (27-of-69) from the field, nearly doubling the Sundbirds' field goal attempts as Fresno Pacific connected on only 13-of-36 (.361) from the field. The `Dogs outrebounded Fresno Pacific 48-19, including grabbing 25 offensive boards. They also swiped 18 steals and finished with 31 points off turnovers.
The Bulldogs return to action at home on Friday hosting Washington at the Save Mart Center at 7 p.m., PT. Fans can purchase four tickets for the game for $12.
