FRESNO, Calif. - Despite five Bulldogs in double figures and a fifth career, and second consecutive, double-double from redshirt sophomore center Bego Faz Davalos, Fresno State dropped a hard-fought 89-79 defeat to Washington on Friday evening at the Save Mart Center.
Fresno State (1-2) was led in scoring by the duo of Faz Davalos and Moriah Faulk who each finished with a season-high 16 points and both added double-digit performances on the boards with 16 and 11, respectively. It was the second consecutive outing the 'Dogs have had two players with double-doubles and marked a career-high for boards for Faz Davalos.
Senior forward Toni Smith and senior guard Shauqunna Collins chipped in 14 points apiece and freshman forward Breanne Knishka added 13 points, including three from behind the arc.
"Not just in points, I'm just as pleased with the rebounds," head coach Jaime White said. "Bego had seven offensive rebounds and Moriah had 11 total rebounds. I thought Toni (Smith) had some great moments too with 14 points. Breanne (Knishka) kept hanging around and knocking some down. I thought Shauqunna (Collins) did a good job of pushing some tempo when she had it."
Washington (3-0) was led in scoring by junior All-America candidate Kelsey Plum with a season-best 32 points and Chantel Osahor who added 17 points and nine rebounds.
The 'Dogs jumped out to an early 7-2 lead after a Knishka 3-pointer and kept the early lead before the Huskies jumped ahead 10-9 on a Brianna Ruiz 3-pointer. A back-and-forth first quarter saw the 'Dogs hold a 22-20 lead after shooting nearly 50 percent (9-of-19) from the field in the frame.
Continuing to stay even for much of the second quarter, the 'Dogs pulled in front by five (32-27) after a three-point play from Faulk and a layup by Collins as they took a five-point lead into the locker room.
The 'Dogs opened up the second half with a jumper from Faz Davalos to take a 41-34 lead, its largest of the evening, but the Huskies responded with a 21-8 run over the ensuing five minutes as the visitors jumped ahead 54-49 with 4:51 to play in the third. The 'Dogs responded with an 11-0 run highlighted by three consecutive 3-pointers from Faulk and a layup from Brittany Aikens to take a 60-54 edge before Washington rallied for 11 of the last 15 points of the quarter to take a one-point lead into the fourth.
A 3-pointer from Knishka gave the 'Dogs a 67-65 edge, but the Huskies continued to stay hot from the field going on a 12-0 run with Plum scoring or assisting on nine of the points, as the Huskies took a 77-67 lead with 4:58 to play, much of which saw senior guard Alex Furr, and primary defender on Plum, on the bench with four fouls. Plum finished with a season-high 32 points, 17 coming after Furr was called for her fourth foul with 2:01 remaining in the third.
The 'Dogs cut the lead to four at 79-75 on Knishka's third trey of the game from the left key with 3:41 to play, but the Huskies responded once again to push it back to a ten-point advantage winning by the double digit advantage.
The 'Dogs shot 44 percent from the floor (33-of-75) and held a 43-36 edge in rebounds. The Bulldogs dished out a season-high 19 assists and the 'Dogs bench blanked the Huskies 22-0.
The Bulldogs return to action on Monday evening when they host No. 22 George Washington at 7 p.m. at the Save Mart Center. The contest is called "Bring Your 'A' Game" as students K-8th grade who bring their report card will get in free.
