FRESNO, Calif. --- The Fresno State men's basketball team earned an 80-59 victory over the Delaware State Hornets to win the 2015 Roundball Showcase on Friday night at the Save Mart Center.
Fresno State (5-0) is off to its best start since opening 7-0 in 2006.
"I think our guys did it with defense," Fresno State head coach Rodney Terry said. "(Delaware State) challenged us defensively to not be forced to spread out."
The Bulldogs' defense limited the Hornets to 31.7 percent shooting from the field, including just 23.3 percent in the second half.
Offensively, the 'Dogs were led by senior guard Cezar Guerrero, who had a game-best 20 points and added six rebounds and three assists.
"Cezar's put the time in," Terry said. "I've said that to our team, he's worked really hard on his shooting. He's been in the gym and put time in. I said to the guys, `you're going to get what you invest in this game. If you invest in the game and you work then you'll see positive results.' Cezar has seen that the last couple of games, the ball going through the net because he's put the time in."
Senior guard Marvelle Harris posted 17 points, nine assists and seven rebounds while junior forward Torren Jones notched his third double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Junior wing Paul Watson also reached double figures with 13 points.
After a competitive first half that saw Fresno State lead 40-34 at halftime, the Bulldogs used a 16-0 run midway through the second half to pull away from the Hornets. Freshmen Sam Bittner, Grant Shell and Ountae Campbell each made their debuts late in the game, with Bittner scoring his first points of his career on a 3-pointer from the left wing.
Fresno State (5-0) had a rebounding edge of 51-32. Jones had 10 rebounds, Cullen Russo had nine and Karachi Edo finished with eight.
Delaware State (0-6) got 10 points apiece from Kavon Waller and Aric Dickerson.
Fresno State will play three of its next four games on the road, including a trip to Eugene's Matthew Knight Arena to play No. 21/23 Oregon on Monday at 5 p.m. PT on the Pac-12 Networks and 940 AM ESPN Radio.
"This time of year everybody is going to play everybody extremely hard," Terry said. "If you look around the country right now there is a lot of parity in college basketball. You have to be ready to play on any given night. It doesn't matter if you're home or on the road, you've got to come play. Obviously we've got a lot of respect for Oregon and what they've been able to do there. We're excited about the opportunity. I think our guys will come ready to play."
