Fresno State Head Coach Tim DeRuyter
Opening statement . . .
"The game is what it was. We had a chance at halftime. I thought we competed well. We came back after turning the ball over. I thought we played well against the run early on in the football game and felt good. We came out in the second half, let them get some plays on us on third down, they were able to convert throwing the ball to [Hasaan Henderson] and the quarterback running the ball. We've gotta do a better job being disciplined in our pass rush lanes, and we weren't. They took advantage of that. Offensively, we struggled a bit in the second half to get going. We decided to go with Zack [Greenlee] down the stretch. Kilton [Anderson] was having a tough time throwing the ball and we thought we needed a spark. To give them credit, they found plays in the second half. We got a little desperate and they hit us on a couple blitzes."
"It hurts. We've got a bunch of guys that work their tails off wanting to put themselves in a position to win a football game. We didn't get it done. We'll be back tomorrow to fix it and move on to Hawai'i."
On slow offensive start in the second half . . .
"I've got to look at the film. We went three-and-out the first couple of drives. We were trying to make some adjustments and I looked up and we're getting ready to punt the ball. As for the first couple of drives, I'm not sure."
On difficulty of adjusting during three-and-outs . . .
"It's football. You've got to be able to make quick adjustments and get guys back on out there. Right now we're a fragile football team. When adversity hits, we've got to be able to bow up and do a better job coaching our guys to respond to it."
On the upcoming road trip . . .
"I'm confident our guys will come back to work. That's the one thing that's been encouraging. Our staff and players have been showing up each and every week and working hard to get better. We're getting better but we're not consistent on either side of the ball. Today, on special teams, we had way too many penalties. You can't do that and be a good football team. There are things we have to clean up."
On the Nevada offense . . .
"They hit us on a couple power plays. We didn't fit it well. As our guys got tired, we tried to run a couple pressures to stop it and we didn't. We got cut off on a gap, we missed a tackle, and when you blitz everybody at it, it can be feast or famine and they feasted and hit us for a couple of big plays."
Malique Micenheimer, Fresno State Running Back
Overall thoughts on the loss …
"It hurts, we had a lot of opportunities that we missed and we have to play better."
On how the score ended up after coming out of halftime …
"I felt like coming out of halftime, we were down by one point but it was an even game. We had a lot of opportunities that we missed as a team."
On if Nevada was doing anything different defensively to start the third quarter …
"No, I feel like everything we prepared for is what we saw. We just have to play better, honestly. I feel like there were so many opportunities out there that we didn't take advantage of."
On how frustrating it was being on the sideline for the most of the third quarter …
"It's hard, but I trust in the coaches decisions and I know they are going to put us in a position to win. You have to wait, and when it is your turn, you have to make plays."
Tyquwan Glass, Fresno State Defensive Back
On his interception …
"Just seeing the ball, I knew I had to go get it. We worked on a lot of ball drills and I finally got the opportunity, so I had to take advantage of it."
On covering Hasaan Henderson …
"He is pretty big, but I did what I had to do, and he just did what he did."
On the push-off call …
"I don't know, they said he pushed off, but I just felt like it was a nice throw on a back shoulder so I really couldn't do anything."
On the long ball with Charles Washington …
"I just saw the ball thrown and I tried to run as fast as I could to intercept it, but it was a little far."
