FRESNO, Calif. - The United Equestrian Conference named three members of the Fresno State equestrian team October Riders of the Month, as announced by the National Collegiate Equestrian Association on Friday.
On the Western side, junior Taylor Brown was honored in Reining and sophomore Taylor Dixon in Horsemanship, while sophomore Sierra Swaffar represented the Hunt Seat team in Equitation on the Flat.
Dixon logged a 5-2 record, with all but one victory coming on the road, and averaged a score of 73.57 in Horsemanship over the course of seven meets. The Delaware native earned three Most Outstanding Player accolades last month, including two in Horsemanship for her rides against No. 1 Georgia and No. 5 Texas A&M. In her second season at Fresno State, Dixon has been recognized by the UEC on two occasions with her first coming in November of 2014, after going undefeated at home.
The remaining duo, Brown and Swaffar, each earned their second honor for their performance in October after being named the NCEA Riders of the Month earlier this week. Brown's perfect record led her to five wins and a pair of Most Outstanding Player awards in Reining. The California local owns three UEC Rider of the Month accolades during her Bulldog career.
Also undefeated last month, Swaffar tallied six victories over the course of seven meets with an impressive four MOP honors on the flat. This month marks her first collegiate national and league accolades, as she looks to continue her breakthrough season as a sophomore.
Of the four honors that the UEC awarded on Friday, Fresno State claimed three while SMU's Sylvia de Toledo earned the remaining award in Equitation Over Fences.
Among the 18 Division I collegiate programs in the NCEA, No. 8 Fresno State leads the six-team United Equestrian Conference with an overall record of 3-4 as all three victories came over league competitors – New Mexico State (12-8), UT-Martin (12-3), and Delaware State (9-7).
In less than two weeks, Brown is slated to represent Fresno State at the American Quarter Horse Association Horsemanship Challenge in Oklahoma City, Okla. The ‘Dogs will collectively be back in action starting the first week of February, and will later compete on their home dirt during a tri-meet March 18-19.
