RENO, Nev. - The opening weekend of Mountain West conference play ended for Fresno State with a 7-4 loss to Nevada on a chilly Sunday afternoon at Peccole Park. The Wolf Pack accounted for three runs in the eighth that sank the `Dogs to complete the three-game sweep.
Fresno State (3-4, 0-3 MW) opened Sunday's contest plating the game's first three runs. The scoring began with back-to-back lead off doubles in the second by Manny Argomaniz and Taylor Tempel - Tempel registered the RBI double. Ryan Dobson drove home Tempel later in the frame on a single through the left side. In the third, Taylor Ward hit a leadoff double to the right field gap, it would produce a run when Argomaniz picked up his second hit of the game, an RBI single that gave the `Dogs a 3-0 lead.
Nevada (7-0, 3-0 MW) scored the next three runs, chipping away at the Bulldogs lead with single runs in the third, fifth and sixth innings. The Wolf Pack did not tally their first hit of the game until the third, but it proved costly, being an RBI double off the bat of Austin Byler - Fresno State starter Garrett Mundell walked the batter on the previous at-bat.
Mundell went 5.0 innings on the mound, allowing two earned runs, three hits, and four strikeouts against two walks in the no decision.
Fresno State regained the lead in the seventh, taking a 4-3 lead in top half, but Nevada answered in the bottom half to tie the game once more, 4-4.
Sunday's matchup was put away in the eighth as Nevada scored three runs on three hits, two walks and a Bulldog error. Tim Borst was on the mound to start the inning, while Jake Shull finished the frame.
Argomaniz led Fresno State with two hits. His double in the second was his seventh of the season, a MW-best.
Borst (0-1) was charged with the loss, while Cameron Rowland (2-0) earned the win. Adam Whitt picked up his second save of the series in as many days.
Fresno State returns to Beiden Field on Tuesday to host USC. The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee will host an equipment drive prior to the game. Every donation will go to a local underprivileged middle school in need of proper athletic gear. All gently used sports equipment, clothing and gear are welcome. First pitch versus the Trojans is at 6:35 p.m.
