FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State posted its second 7-0 win of the season, blanking San Francisco on Sunday at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center. The Bulldogs have now won their last four dual matches in a row to improve to 4-2 on the season.
Coming off of a 4-2 win against No. 66 Kansas State last night to move to 3-1, San Francisco was unable to sustain its momentum as Fresno State started fast and never looked back. The 'Dogs opened the morning with 6-2 win from Anneka and Sophie Watts, which was followed by Maiar and Rana Sherif Ahmed who clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 win.
Maiar opened up singles action with a straight-set 6-2, 6-2 victory over Thyra Taune in the second flight. No. 47 Sophie Watts then defeated No. 49 Andrea Ka 6-3, 6-2 and Anne Susdorf topped Sofia Holmberg 6-2, 6-3 to clinch the dual match with wins at the No. 1 and No. 6 flights, respectively.
Rana Sherif Ahmed made it 4-0 with a 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 3 as the Bulldogs' top three players each improved 6-2 on the year. The wins continued for the 'Dog as Anneka Watts and Tanya Murtagh completed the shutout after fighting back to level their matches with 7-6 second sets. Both won 10-2 match tiebreaks for the final two victories on the day.
"It was a great effort by all today. The team was ready to go from the moment we started and did a great job on every court," head coach Ryan Stotland said. "San Francisco is a good team so we had to do a great job all around. It was a proud moment to watch the team apply everything they have been learning, and watching them grow as both players and a team. We will be ready to keep up the momentum on the road this week."
After playing the past two weekends at home, Fresno State will go back on the road next weekend with matches at Pacific at 10 a.m., on Feb. 13, and Santa Clara at 10 a.m., on Feb. 14.
