FRESNO,Calif.-- In a battle of the Bulldogs, the Fresno State lacrosse team came up short on the Soccer and Lacrosse Field on Wednesday afternoon, dropping a non-conference game to Bryant University, 14-9.
After gaining an early 2-1 lead just seven minutes in, Fresno State let Bryant regain control, allowing three straight goals and a 4-2 advantage. The 'Dogs then trailed the remainder of the game, keeping within range though could not close the deal.
Drawcontrols played a major factor in the Bulldog matchup, as Bryant had 17 to Fresno State's eight.
"We were still struggling as a team on the draw, which is a big momentum changer," said head coach Jessica Giglio.
Fresno State struggled to containthe Bryant Bulldogs as they were outshot 28-17. Junior Lauren Descalzo led the drive for Bryant who recorded a game-high seven goals off 12 shots.
Leading the Fresno State Bulldogs, sophomore Caroline Dineen-Carlson recorded her fourth hat trick of the year with three goals. Dineen-Carlson leads the 'Dogs with 17 goals this season.
In her seventh start for the 'Dogs, freshman attacker Nicole Ortlieb posted a personal best three goals off four shots.
Marcy Levatino, Anjelica Fuccillo and Brooke Filgo all added one goal apiece for Fresno State. Fuccillo also had two assists to total three points for the 'Dogs.
In split time, sophomore goalkeeper Meganne Weissenfels recorded five saves in 39 minutes in cage while freshman Natalie Chaffin stopped four balls to close out the game.
"I think for us moving forward, we need to play a 60 minute game," added Giglio. "I think that is something we have been struggling with and we are completely capable of doing it- but we need to do it consistently. I think this team is extremely talented and we can change program history but we have to be willing to work for 60 minutes to do it."
In search of their third win of the season, Fresno State (2-5, 0-3 MPSF) continues its six game homestand on the Soccer and Lacrosse Field when they host Winthrop this Sunday, March 15 at noon.
