Fresno State Downed by Winthrop

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State women's lacrosse team was unable slow down the nation's No. 5 scoring offense on Sunday afternoon, falling 17-6 to Winthrop at the Fresno State Soccer & Lacrosse Field. Winthrop's Jenna Kasmarik, who led the NCAA in goals per game entering the day, finished with a game-high seven goals.
The attack-minded Eagles (7-1) struck early and often, scoring eight unanswered goals in the opening 20 minutes with three coming from Kasmarik. Freshman Nicole Ortlieb was able to pull the Bulldogs (2-6) back within six, finding the back of the net twice in less than 30 seconds.
Winthrop was able to build on its lead though, outscoring the `Dogs 4-2 to close out the half. Senior Marcy Levatino netted her second of two goals on the day with 19 seconds to play until halftime.
With just under 15 minutes to play in the game, the Eagles took a 16-4 before Caroline Dineen-Carlson scored both of her goals.
The Bulldogs were outshot 28-12 on the afternoon as the Eagles controlled much of the game's possession through a 17-8 advantage in draw controls.
Fresno State continues its homestand on March 19as the team faces Monmouth at 7 p.m., PT at the Fresno State Soccer & Lacrosse Field.
