FRESNO, Calif.- Fresno State battled until the end, but ultimately fell 8-7 to Monmouth on Thursday night at the Fresno State Soccer & Lacrosse Field.
The Bulldogs raced out to a 3-0 lead in less than six minutes behind a pair of goals from junior Anjelica Fuccillo and one from leading-scorer Caroline Dineen-Carlson. Monmouth's Olivia Higson brought the Hawks back though, scoring twice before the 15-minute mark. The Hawks momentum continued as they scored three more unanswered goals before the end of the half, with Higson recording her third of the half with 3:29 remaining as Monmouth took a 5-3 lead going into the break.
Fresno State countered Monmouth's late first-half goals with three straight of its own to open the second period. Senior Marcy Levatino then found the back of the net twice within less than four minutes as Fresno State took a 6-5 advantage with 17:38 to play.
The momentum swings continued as Monmouth, led by two more goals from Higson scored three times within a three-minute span with under six minutes to go. Levatino scored her third goal of the game with 1:31 to play to cut the Bulldogs' deficit to one, but that was as close as the home side could get.
