FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State baseball team defeated Wagner 10-1 on Wednesday night at Beiden Field. With the win, the Bulldogs swept its two-game midweek series against the Seahawks and improved its record to 9-9 overall (9-2 at Beiden Field).
Redshirt freshman Anthony Arias earned his first collegiate win in his first career start with a gem on the mound in front of 1,019 fans. Arias allowed one earned run on three hits in 5 2/3 innings of work in the win. Additionally, he tied Jimmy Lambert's single-game 2015 season-best strikeout total with seven, and did not walk a batter.
Fresno State plated a pair of runs in both the second and third innings, giving the 'Dogs a 4-0 advantage with Arias at work. Arias' one run allowed was a home run in the fourth that brought Wagner within three.
For the second-straight night the Bulldog bullpen provided scoreless relief work - the combination of Jimmy Lambert (0.1), Brennon Williams (1.0), Rickey Ramirez (1.0) and Dominic Topoozian (1.0) shutdown Wagner over the course of 3 1/3 innings work.
"What I really liked is that we pitched outstanding," said head coach Mike Batesole. "That was fantastic, and Arias was terrific. When you pitch well and play defense, you're going to be in every game and today we were in it until we broke it open."
The Bulldog offense erupted for five runs in the seventh inning, breaking open the game to give Fresno State a 9-1 lead. A pair of newcomers to the offense were the catalysts behind the onslaught, Torin Goldstein and Nick Warren. Goldstein tallied his first career RBI with a single to left field, which scored Jake Stone who doubled for the 'Dogs first hit of the inning. Two batters later with the bases loaded, Warren registered a bases clearing triple. He would go on to score during the next at-bat thanks to a wild pitch.
Aaron Arruda doubled home Christian Prior in the eighth for the Bulldogs 10th run of the game, marking the second time Fresno State reached a double-digit run total this season (10 vs. UNLV, Feb. 27).
Fresno State continues its homestand Friday night against UC Davis for the first of a three-game series. First pitch is at 6:35 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, the Sunday finale is set for 1:05 p.m.
