FRESNO, Calif. - A Fresno State fielding error with runners on the corners and two outs in the top of the ninth allowed UC Davis to scratch out one run and break up a scoreless pitcher's duel. The unearned run decided the game as Fresno State fell 1-0 on a warm Sunday afternoon at Pete Beiden Field.
Sunday's rubber match pit two seniors against one another on the mound, Garrett Mundell for the Bulldogs and Raul Jacobson for the Aggies. Mundell tossed a career-high 7 2/3 innings of scoreless baseball. UC Davis scattered six hits against the Bulldog captain. He struck out five and walked one.
"Coach [Steve] Rousey did a great job of calling pitches and [Taylor] Ward was back there as a backstop for me," said Mundell. "Using our defense is the biggest thing we did today. We fought hard."
On the other side, Jacobson held Fresno State to two hits, also in 7 2/3 innings of work. He produced nine strikeouts and walked three batters. Of Jacobson's walks, he walked two in the first and threw the last in the eighth.
Jake Shull made his 12th appearance in relief, taking over for Mundell in the eighth to get the final out. A leadoff walk issued to Austin March in the ninth put the go-ahead runner on base for UC Davis. A failed sacrifice bunt attempt followed, and then a strikeout. Izaak Silva kept the Aggies in it with a two-out single, advancing March to third on a hit-and-run play. The game-winner ensued as Alex Aguiar hit a groundball to second baseman Jesse Medrano, who could not get a handle on the routine play, allowing March to score.
Brody Russell (double), Manny Argomaniz and McCarthy Tatum accounted for the Bulldogs' three hits.
Shull (2-3) was charged with the loss. Spencer Henderson (1-1) picked up the win and Zach Stone earned his second save in as many days - fourth of the season.
Fresno State (10-11, 3-3 MW) travels to USC on Tuesday and will be back at Beiden Field Friday for a Mountain West series versus San Jose State. The Bulldogs will clash with SJSU at 6:35 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and at 1:05 p.m Sunday.
