College Sports Madness | Mountain West Weekly Honors
FRESNO, Calif.- The Fresno State softball team was honored on Tuesday morning with multiple weekly accolades after picking up four wins against Providence (6-1), Pacific (1-0), Montana (5-1) and Cal Poly (4-1) at the annual Fresno State Classic. College Sports Madness recognized Kierra Willis, and both Brenna Moss and Jill Compton were honored by the Mountain West Conference for their contribution guiding the `Dogs to a 4-1 weekend record.
College Sports Madness released its weekly selections on Tuesday morning, naming Willis the Madness Mountain West Softball Player of the Week for her impact on the team in the `Dogs last weekend of tournament play. The Bulldog left fielder tied for a team-best of five runs generated on two hits including a double and a two-run home run, adding to her five career total as a Bulldog sophomore. Defensively, Willis had an errorless showing in the outfield for the `Dogs with nine putouts and two assists.
Two more Bulldogs received weekly honors on Tuesday morning as senior Brenna Moss was named the Mountain West Player of the Week and junior Jill Compton was selected as the MW Pitcher of the Week for games held March 12-15.
As the `Dogs starting center fielder, Moss led the team offensively after going 9-for-16 in the `Dogs five-game weekend slate with three doubles, three runs scored and five stolen bases. The senior leader held a team-best batting average (.563), hits (9), doubles (3), total bases (12) and stolen bases (5) while posting a perfect fielding mark.
The Psychology major posted three of her nine hits against No. 16 Minnesota including her second double of the weekend, giving Moss a .654 batting average against the seven ranked opponents Fresno State has faced this season.
Compton, Fresno State's starting pitcher, was named the Mountain West Pitcher of the Week after capping the weekend with 19 strikeouts, earning three of the Bulldog's five starts. Compton threw a total of 21 innings in the circle for the `Dogs, allowing only four runs and recorded a 2-1 mark with wins over Pacific and Cal Poly.
The right-handed ace leads the Fresno State pitching staff with 11 wins, 22 games starts, nine complete games, 117.1 innings pitched, 117 strikeouts and 23 appearances. Compton was only the ninth Bulldog in school history to throw a perfect game on Friday, March 6 against Iowa, with the last coming in 2010.
This weekend, Fresno State will make its way to Fort Collins, Colo., for the first conference series of the 2015 season against Colorado State (18-13) before hosting San Jose State for the second round of Mountain West play March 27-29.
