MORAGA, Calif. - The Fresno State lacrosse team earned its second road win of the season on Thursday, defeating Saint Mary's 18-6 at the SMC Recreation Field. The Bulldogs were led by the scoring prowess of Anjelica Fuccillo and Marcy Levatino, who each scored four goals.
"I thought it was a real team effort today. We had a 64 percent shooting percentage and went 8-of-9 on free positions, which was a point of emphasis," head coach Jessica Giglio said. "I was extremely proud with our caused turnovers to turnover ratio, and Meganne [Weissenfels] was a strong presence in the cage with a 63 percent save ratio and 10 saves.
"We're looking forward to a break now to regroup before taking on UC Davis at home and battle for our next conference win."
After allowing the first goal of the game in the opening four minutes, Fuccillo equalized with a free position shot less than three minutes later. During the next five minutes, Levatino put her stamp on the game for Fresno State (3-8, 1-5 MPSF), scoring three straight goals before 11 minutes had passed.
Caroline Dineen-Carlson added one more to give the Bulldogs a 5-1 lead before the Gaels could answer back with a goal from Jaclyn Biggers with just over 15 minutes to go. Dineen-Carlson then pushed the lead to back to four with her second of the game half. Logan Eisinger quickly made it 7-2 with 14:31 remaining in the half.
Fresno State took an 8-5 lead into the break as the Gaels outscored the visitors 3-1 during the final 14-plus minutes.
The Bulldogs stormed out the half with five unanswered goals, from four different scorers, two coming from Fuccillo, while holding Saint Mary's without a goal for more than 18 minutes. Holding a 13-6 lead with just over 10 minutes remaining in the game, the `Dogs continued to put the pressure on the Gaels.
At the 10:02 mark, Dineen-Carlson finished off her hat track. Then, Lindsay Hobson, Nicole Ortlieb and Brooke Filgo each finished the game by scoring their second goals of the day during final 10 minutes of play.
Fresno State will return home on April 8 as the team hosts UC Davis at 5 p.m., PT.
