'Dogs Defeat SDSU, Head to Championship Round

FRESNO, Calif.--In the first round of matchups in the United Equestrian Conference championship on Friday, the No. 1-seeded Fresno State Bulldogs defeated the No. 4 seed, South Dakota State University, 12-3, earning a spot in the championship tomorrow.
The competition, held at the Student Horse Center on the Fresno State campus, began Friday with the first round of matchups. Fresno State defeated South Dakota State University, and Southern Methodist University defeated New Mexico State University.
The `Dogs defeated the Jackrabbits, 12-3.
In the hunt seat, Fresno State came out on top, 6-2.
In equitation over fences, the teams tied 2-2. Senior Randi Pomrehn earned a point for the `Dogs, defeating her opponent 149-123. Freshman Kylina Chalack earned the second point when she defeated her opponent, 166-147.
On the flat, Fresno State swept South Dakota State University, 4-0. Freshman Sierra Swaffar took a point for the `Dogs, defeating her opponent 155-130. Pomrehn earned her second point of the day with her score of 149 over her opponent's 123. Chalack also earned a second point, 146-143. Senior Kara Spicer took the last point, defeating her opponent 161-152.
In the western category, the Bulldogs had the upper hand, 6-1.
The score was 3-1 in reining. Sophomore Taylor Brown defeated her opponent, 146.5-137.5. Senior Kirsten McKillop grabbed the second point with her score of 144.5 over her opponent's 135. Freshman Taylor Dixon tied with her opponent, 143.5-all.
Fresno State had another sweep in reining, 4-0. Senior Brigid O'Leary earned a point, defeating her opponent 138-131.5. Brown earned her second point for the day, 138.5-137. McKillop, earned another point, as well, 134.5-132.5. Senior Ciara Kozlowski took the last point with her score of 135 over the Jackrabbit's 132.
Overall, the `Dogs conquered South Dakota State University, 12-3.
Southern Methodist University defeated New Mexico State University, 10-6.
In the championship tomorrow, the Fresno State will take on No. 2-seeded SMU. For the consolation, South Dakota State will compete against New Mexico State University.
Competition will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday morning at the Student Horse Center. Most Outstanding Players from both days will be announced. Also, the nine senior Bulldogs will be honored for Senior Day midway through the matchup.
