ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The Fresno State baseball team dropped its series rubber match to New Mexico 5-1 on Sunday afternoon at Lobo Field. The loss sets back the Bulldogs overall record to 16-13 overall and 7-5 in Mountain West action.
Fresno State struggled to find offense on Sunday as a trio of Lobo pitchers limited the Bulldogs to three hits on the day. However, the Bulldogs started Sunday's scoring by plating a run in the first inning. Designated hitter Taylor Tempel singled at the two-hole and manufactured it into a run thanks to a walk drawn by Taylor Ward, a balk and then a sacrifice fly by Manny Argomaniz.
Ward bunt singled in the third to end a run of eight-straight Bulldog batters retired by New Mexico's Carson Schneider. Brody Russell posted the third Fresno State hit in the fifth.
Much of the opposite was the case for the Lobos on Sunday as they outhit the Bulldogs 12-3. New Mexico sparked itself by putting a leadoff batter on-base in seven of eight innings - six hits and one walk. Of the Lobos 12 hits, four were doubles and one was a triple.
Despite being outgunned offensively, it was a tight game until the bottom of the sixth. The Lobos broke a 1-1 tie with three runs in the sixth to grab a 4-1 lead. New Mexico added one more in the seventh.
Fresno State had a chance to break the 1-1 tie in the top half of the sixth once New Mexico issued two walks and a hit by pitch to load the bases. But the 'Dogs were unable to capitalize on the Lobos pitching miscues. Fresno State left six runners on base in total from the sixth inning forward without registering a hit.
Ricky Thomas (1-1) was charged with the loss while Jake Cole (1-0) was credited with the win.
Fresno State continues its seven-game season-long road trip on Wednesday at UC Santa Barbara. First pitch is at 3 p.m. in the first of four games that will be played April 1-4.
