FRESNO, Calif. -- Fresno State guard Alex Furr has been granted a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA, allowing her to compete for the women's basketball team during the 2015-16 season.
"I love being a Bulldog and I am very lucky to be allowed one more year to put on my jersey," Furr said of being granted the waiver.
On Furr's behalf, university compliance services and the women's basketball program had previously submitted a request to allow the extension of her five-year clock so she could compete for the team for her fourth season. The wavier requires that for reasons outside of a student-athlete's control, that they were deprived of the opportunity to participate in at least two seasons of the permitted four within their five-year clock. The native of Athens, Texas missed nearly all of the 2011-12, and the entire 2012-13 seasons while recovering from two knee injuries.
"My injuries were the biggest blessing in disguise," Furr said. "They have given me the opportunity to be in the program for six years and the chance to earn my master's degree. I came to Fresno State because of the great facilities, but going through what I have gone through, I know what makes Fresno State so special, and that is the people. I really appreciate all of the support of my teammates, coaches, administrators and our fans.
"I'd also like to thank Director of Sports Medicine, Kelli Eberlein," Furr added. "She put me through both of my rehabs while she was the head women's athletic trainer and I could not have asked for better guidance and support. I would not be where I am today if it was not for her and all of her help, along with the help of our current athletic trainer Colin Mulligan."
Furr was a key piece to the Bulldogs roster this season in head coach Jaime White's first season at Fresno State. The senior started 31 of 33 games, averaging just over 30 minutes per contest anad was the team's top three-point threat with 54 made 3's while averaging 7.8 points per game.
"We are extremely excited about Alex Furr being back next year," White said. "She will bring leadership and toughness to a young team next year."
