CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State defeated Fresno State 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at Goss Stadium, completing a four-game series sweep. The Bulldogs return home on Tuesday for the first of five-straight games at Beiden Field where they are 7-2, starting with a two-game midweek series against Wagner of the Northeast Conference.
Fresno State (7-9, 3-3 MW) was led by Sunday starter Garrett Mundell, who surrendered two runs on five hits in 5 1/3 innings against the Beavers. The senior struck out a season-high five batters against one walk in a solid outing on the bump. Although, the two Beaver runs, one in the first, and another in third, was all that Oregon State needed to take down the 'Dogs in a game they were hard-pressed to plate a run.
"We need to keep playing the way we're playing as crazy as that sounds," said head coach Mike Batesole. "Oregon State just played tremendous this weekend. Give our kids credit, they didn't take a pitch off and played their hearts out."
Fresno State managed to get a leadoff batter on base five of the first six innings, and again in the ninth. Austin Guibor was responsible for the Bulldog RBI in the fifth that scored Fresno State's one run - a bunt squeeze that scored Kenny Corey who led off the frame with a single.
Manny Argomaniz gave Fresno State one last gasp in the ninth, leading off with a double. The senior led Fresno State with a team-high and series best three hits on Sunday, a day he was 3-for-3 with a walk.
The bid for a rally was cut short two batters later as Joe Prior hit into a game-ending 5-4-3 double play, a common trait of Sunday's game. Of Fresno State's six innings it had a leadoff batter reach base, four of those innings closed with a double play to keep runners from scoring.
"We really hit the ball hard all weekend," Batesole added. "They just magically seemed to be in the right spot all weekend."
The Bulldogs' streaky season continues Tuesday - a campaign with winning streaks of three and four, and losing steaks of four and five. First pitch against Wagner is set for 6:35 p.m. on both Tuesday and Wednesday night.
