SAN DIEGO -- The No. 39-ranked Fresno State women's tennis team came back strong after dropping only its fourth loss of the season on Friday as the Bulldogs remained undefeated in the Mountain West with a 4-1 win over No. 73 San Diego State on Sunday at the Aztec Tennis Center.
"It was a great win today to keep our undefeated conference record going into the last match of the year," head coach Ryan Stotland said. "We know we have a target on our backs as we are the defending champions, but we are embracing the challenge.
The two sides split the first two doubles matches, leaving the doubles point up to the No. 1 match between Maiar and Rana Sherif Ahmed, and Kristin Buth and Isabeele Hoorn. The Bulldogs' dominant sisters got back on track today, winning 6-4 to earn their 20th victory of the season.
Maiar extended the `Dogs (15-4, 5-0 MW) lead to 2-0 with a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 2 over Tami Nguyen. No. 70 Sophie Watts then put Fresno State within one point of clinching the dual match as she defeated Buth 6-2, 7-5 on Court One.
The Aztecs (11-10, 2-2 MW) cut their deficit to two as Kennedy Davis defeated Rana Sherif Ahmed, 7-5, 6-3, at No. 3, but in the No. 6 spot, Anne Susdorf clinched the dual match for the `Dogs in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.
Fresno State will be off until April 18 when the team looks to finish the Mountain West season undefeated as it travels to UNLV.
