SAN DIEGO, Calif.- The Fresno State softball team (24-12, 5-2 MW) made their way to San Diego, Calif., for its second away conference series of the regular season. The Bulldogs edged San Diego State (23-13, 6-1 MW) 5-0, giving the Aztecs their first Mountain West loss of the season after a 6-0 start in conference play.
"Tonight was a good team win," head coach Trisha Ford said. "Jill [Compton] came out and threw lights out for us and we had contributions from up and down our lineup, it was a great way to start the series."
Three singles and a right-side groundout from Paige Gumz put Fresno State on the board in the top of the first inning. Alyssa Villalpando continued the `Dogs first inning rally with a two-out single up the middle to knock in two additional runs giving the Bulldogs an early lead of 3-0.
Junior Jill Compton (14-9) drew the start in the circle against the Aztecs on Thursday night, tossing two strikeouts in just the first inning and leaving San Diego State hitless after the first 10 batters faced.
Making her 27th start of the year, Compton was on her way to a perfect game through three innings before the Aztecs recorded their first hit in the bottom of the fourth. During Thursday's action, the righty had four strikeouts with only one walk and two hits, capturing her fourteenth win of the season.
Fresno State was led by this season's newcomers including Villalpando, Chase LeeHong and Malia Rivers. After scoring two runs in the first inning, Villalpando had a solo home run in the seventh inning to put Fresno State up 5-0 and went 4-for-4 on the night. LeeHong posted three hits in three at-bats and Rivers went 2-for-4 with one of the `Dogs five runs with five additional Bulldogs recording a hit against San Diego State on Thursday.
