FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State softball team swept their doubleheader with Colorado State at Margie Wright Diamond on Saturday.
After walking-off the Rams in extra-innings in game one by a final of 3-2, Fresno State held on for 2-1 victory in game two to take both games against Colorado State.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1: Fresno State 3, Colorado State 2
Lauryn Carranco set the tone on the mound for the Bulldogs, striking out six of the first nine batters she faced without allowing a baserunner until the fourth inning.Â
With one out in the bottom of the fourth, Alyssa Ramirez smashed an opposite field home run to right to give Fresno State a 1-0 lead. Colorado State responded soon after with a solo home run in the top half of the fifth to tie the game, 1-1.
The Rams pushed across the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh on a double to left center as Fresno State trailed 2-1 heading into the home half of the inning. Down to their final out, Tiara Westbrook's clutch single to right field scored Arianna Aguayo all the way from first base to bring the game even at 2-2.Â
After keeping Colorado State off the scoreboard in the top of the eight, Jamie Hicks was the hero in the bottom half of the inning when her double to right center scored Emma Martinez as the Bulldogs walked-off the Rams in game one of their doubleheader.Â
Game 2: Fresno State 2, Colorado State 1
Fresno State claimed the first run of the game in the first inning. Jamie Hicks connected with a pitch that bounced off the pitcher's glove, allowing Emma Martinez to slide into home plate safely from third as the Bulldogs jumped ahead 1-0.Â
Alyssa Ramirez toed the rubber for the Bulldogs in game two as she kept the Ram's bats quiet, with Colorado State failing to produce a baserunner until the fifth inning.Â
Ramirez provided herself with an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth when she sent a pitch over the center field wall to make it a 2-0 ballgame.
A leadoff home run in the top of the seventh by the Rams cut Fresno State's lead to 2-1. Colorado State threatened to tie the game as two singles placed runners on first and second with one out. Alyssa Ramirez remained composed on the mound, as the senior induced a game-ending double play as Fresno State completed the sweep over Colorado State and took game two by a final score of 2-1.Â
