FRESNO, Calif. -- An early big inning hurt the Fresno State baseball team again on Sunday as the Bulldogs gave up a five-spot in the third inning in a 9-4 loss to San Diego State on Sunday afternoon at Beiden Field.
The Aztecs took two of the three Mountain West games on the weekend to become to the first conference opponent to win a series in Fresno in the 2015 season.
"We played some outstanding defense -- we had four great plays today and didn't make an error," Fresno State head coach Mike Batesole said. "There were 12 hits and six balls that I counted that were barreled up that were hit hard ... but you have five walks or hit batters that scored again. You're not going to win in this conference if you do that."
Leading 1-0, San Diego State loaded the bases with one out in the top of the third on a walk, single and a hit batter. The Aztecs then received a sacrifice fly off the bat of Brody Westmoreland to make it 2-0. Spencer Thornton, Alan Trejo and Steven Pallares all followed that with RBI singles to push the lead to 6-0.
The big inning signaled the end of the day for Bulldog starting pitcher Jimmy Lambert. The sophomore from San Dimas, Calif., lasted three innings, giving up six runs on seven hits. He recorded two strikeouts and also walked three batters.
The six-run cushion was more than enough for San Diego State starter Marcus Reyna. The sophomore lefty threw 6.1 innings and gave up seven hits, but allowed just one run.
Taylor Tempel, Nick Warren, Jesse Medrano and Kevin Viers all had multi-hit days for the Bulldogs. Warren finished 2-for-4 with a run scored. Viers had a 2-for-4 day out of the No.4 spot in the lineup and Medrano was 2-for-2 with a run scored. Tempel, the Bulldogs' leadoff hitter went 2-for-5 with a RBI. The senior's multi-hit game was his eighth in the last 11 games.
Fresno State received a nice middle relief outing from junior Dylan Lee. The lefty threw three scoreless innings and allowed just two hits.
Next up for the Bulldogs is a four-game Bay Area road trip. They will play Tuesday night at 7 p.m. against California before returning to conference play with a three-game weekend series at San Jose State on May 1-3.
